Fun Facts About CEREC Crowns That Will Pique Your Interest

CEREC crowns (or “same-day” crowns, as they’re sometimes called) use cutting-edge technology to deliver a patient’s restoration in a single day. One of these pieces of “cutting-edge tech” is a computer software called “CAD.” CAD stands for Computer Aided Design, and has become a must-have tool for many design-based fields, including architecture. Basically, the software helps your dentist visualize your crown, enabling them to create a much more accurate fit and a much more seamless appearance.

There are many cool facts like that when it comes to CEREC! If you’re interested in seeing more, keep reading.

Same Quality Materials

Oftentimes, it seems the tradeoff for more speed is poorer quality. Look no further than fast fashion for an example of this principle! However, that’s not something you have to worry about with CEREC crowns.

Dentists keep the exact same quality materials (usually porcelain) used for traditional crowns in-office, so that when it’s time to use the CEREC machine, all they have to do is design the crown with CAD, insert the patient’s preferred material, and wait for the tech to carve out the restoration.

No Metal, No Mercury

This means that CEREC crowns are also completely metal-free. But you might be wondering what a metal-free restoration has to do with mercury.

Metal restorations are actually made from a combination of several metal alloys – including mercury. While the FDA considers metal restorations like crowns as generally safe, many patients are concerned about having a highly toxic substance that close to their bodies. It’s hard to fault them for that!

Just as Beautiful

Dentists and patients alike are happy to report that CEREC crowns look just as natural as their traditionally placed counterparts. The restoration might look a little rough “hot off the press,” so to speak, but after a quick polishing it’s difficult to tell one apart from a real tooth. As you’ll see, the benefits of CEREC crowns just keep rolling!

Say Goodbye to The Temporary Crown

With a traditionally placed crown, you would actually need to wear a temporary restoration until the dental lab finishes customizing the permanent version. Temporary crowns help protect your damaged tooth while you wait, but they’re not as durable or comfortable, which can make the next one to two weeks inconvenient.

“Same-day crown” is pretty literal when you use CEREC, though! Give or take about two hours, and your beautiful, customized, well-fitting crown will be ready for placement. Leaving the office with your final restoration the same day as your initial appointment is the main idea behind CEREC.

Talk to Your Dentist

If these fun facts have you thinking that a CEREC crown is what you want, be sure to schedule a consultation with your dentist first. Speed is important, especially when you have a busy calendar, but so is safety and quality. CEREC crowns aren’t for everyone, so it’s worth taking a moment to slow down and talk with a professional. Whatever your situation may be, they’ll help you find the best treatment plan for you and your smile!
