Answering 4 Common Questions About CEREC Crowns

It’s probably no surprise to learn that CEREC crowns are becoming more and more popular as patients and dentists alike discover the benefits of restorations that can be made and placed in just one day. Despite this, however, there are likely to be a few things that you don’t know about this relatively new technology. Below, you’ll find helpful answers to 4 common questions about the CEREC system.

1. Exactly How Long Will It Take to Get a CEREC Crown?

While the exact length of the appointment can vary, it typically takes between one to two hours to complete the process of making and placing a CEREC crown. This accounts for the time needed to remove the necessary amount of enamel from the tooth and for a milling machine to create the restoration. Needless to say, this is significantly faster than the traditional method of getting a dental crown, which often requires at least two appointments that are spread around two weeks apart.

2. How Long Can a CEREC Crown Last?

Like any other dental restoration, CEREC crowns have a finite lifespan. That said, they are very durable and can typically be expected to last for a long time. It’s often possible to keep the same CEREC crown for 10 or even 15 years before it needs to be replaced. However, this largely depends on the care you give it on a daily basis; luckily, this mainly involves the same steps you would follow to protect your natural smile, such as brushing your teeth regularly and not biting down on overly hard foods.

3. When are CEREC Crowns Recommended?

Generally speaking, if you’re eligible for a traditional dental crown, then you also likely qualify for a CEREC crown, which can be used to address the same types of dental problems. Keep in mind, though, that CEREC crowns do have one limitation: they are always made out of ceramic. If you want a crown composed of a different type of material, it will need to be made the traditional way.

4. Is CEREC Safe?

It’s normal to be nervous about undergoing a treatment that utilizes newer technology. That said, CEREC is considered very safe. Crowns made out of ceramic are highly biocompatible, and they are unlikely to trigger an allergic reaction the way metal restorations sometimes can. On top of that, your crown will be carefully designed for your unique smile, so it shouldn’t end up poking or cutting your gums.

Do you have any additional questions about CEREC crowns? If so, be sure to let your dentist know; they can provide the answers you need and help you decide whether CEREC is the best option for repairing your damaged teeth.
